I also get the impression that self-deprecating men are fishing for compliments or validation. It's a bit of a sleezy way to catch two birds with one stone. You get compliments, and you get to appear humble.

Right. Because at it's core self-deprecation is still focusing on self. It's narcissism cloaked in false humility. Contrast that to someone who's more interested in others, and doesn't need to bring themselves up to prove it.
