I'm going to leave the politics to others. The tax part of the Zahawi story, and therefore my role, feels over. But I wanted to sign off by correcting three takes which we’re going to hear a lot of, and I think are wrong. taxpolicy.org.uk/2023/01/29/…
Sacked on a Sunday morning. Here’s why. Sir Laurie Magnus found Nadhim Zahawi guilty of 3 difficult breaches of the ministerial code: covering up HMRC’s investigation, covering up its findings, and making untrue statements to the media about it. Unequivocal and damming.
Zahawi failed to declare that he was under investigation by HMRC when he became chancellor in July
Report says he did not do so "despite the ministerial declaration of interests form including specific prompts on tax affairs and HMRC investigations and disputes"
Nadhim Zahawi failed to declare to the HMRC investigation after his appointment as Chancellor on 5 July 2022 by Boris Johnson
By that stage the investigation had been ongoing for more than a year
Zahawi only updated his declaration on 15th July
The HMRC investigation into Nadhim Zahawi began in April 2021, and HMRC met Zahawi and his advisers in June 2021
Zahawi told ethics watchdog he thought he was just being asked some questions - ethics watchdog says Zahawi should have understood he was under serious investigation
Customers of @JohnLewisRetail are angered at credit card swap as one in twenty is refused and one in six has credit limit cut. NB you have to dig deep to find those figures! They also say customer service from New Day is dreadful compared with HSBC bit.ly/3HnOJFP

I've never seen anything like this before! A medieval sketchbook, in which the artist tries out ideas, copies old masters, does studies. What a lovely thing. jacksonsart.com/blog/2023/01…

"Andy Murray was right all along. It was us who didn’t get it. All the times it was said he should grow old gracefully. Retire, maybe reform his sport, all the roles we had mapped out for him in his dotage. We were wrong. He was right" | ✍️ Martin Samuel thetimes.co.uk/article/austr…
It is essential we create better rules in tennis regarding the weather(light and wind) and starting times or cutoff times for matches. Murray and Kokkinakis will finish around 4am. Crazy- no other sport does this @AustralianOpen@ITFTennis
