The numbers in this piece are dramatically incorrect. The 100,000 domestic adoptions count includes private & public adoptions, including stepparent adoptions. The actual number of infant nonfamilal adoptions is just 18-22k. And there are most than 600k abortions -- about 850k.

They could be used to conceal abuse, violence, sexual assault. They certainly never allow for connection, openness, and possibility of reunification that we know is the minimum bar for the well-being of the children who are left.

These boxes are almost never used (there were 7 safe haven abandonments in the entire state of TX in 2021), and we know almost nothing about the extreme situations in which they are.

Look, the NYT seems to want us to just bring back Dickensian foundling wheels rather than actually having a meaningful social safety net for new parents in crisis. Safe haven boxes are dangerous.
It looks like a library book drop, but it’s really a place for parents to surrender newborns. These safe havens began as a way to prevent the most extreme cases of child abuse, but after Roe, conservative groups are looking to expand them. nyti.ms/3bEhvEP

We remember you, Rosie. 💛
Today, on what would have been her 72nd birthday, we remember Rosie Jiménez (August 5, 1950 – October 3, 1977), the first known person to have died in the US due to an unsafe abortion after the Hyde Amendment was passed, which, in 1977, blocked federal funding for abortion care.

This is a travesty in every way. Nine years for trace amounts? The whole thing has always been a sham and political theatre but there is a very real woman at the center of this wondering if she will be spending the next 9 years of her life in a Russian prison.
