23 March 1912. Rocket scientist, Wernher Von Braun, was born in Wyrzysk (then in Germany). He was a key figure in the development of the V-2 Rocket for Hitler in WW2, and the Saturn-V rocket for the USA during the NASA space programme that led to the moon landing in July 1969.

23 March 1933. The German Reichstag passed the Enabling Act (“Law to Remedy the Distress of People and Reich”). It gave the German Chancellor, Adolf Hitler, power to enact laws without the involvement of the Reichstag or the President, and effectively ended democracy in Germany.

Irena Sendler was a Polish social worker who risked her life during World War II to save Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto. She smuggled around 2,500 children out and found them safe homes outside the ghetto.
