Arthur 3: The War of the Two Worlds ★½ Thankfully this was the last time #LucBesson played with these expensive invisible garden trolls (basically an even blander case of the smurfs). If I'm sick of them after three movies, I don't understand how Luc lived with them for 5 years.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec ★★★ "Death is the only path that leads to birth." #LucBesson is officially a madman. His decisions in this adventure mummy movie, such as everyone other than the supermodel lead (Louise Bourgoin) wears a fatsuit, are cray cray.

Arthur and the Great Adventure ★★ 0% on Rotten Tomatoes is super harsh. Poor #LucBesson, for whatever reason he loves these garden troll things and was convinced audiences would feel the same. It makes no sense, but I approve the casting of Lou Reed & Iggy Pop as the villains.

The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker ★★★ #ColetteCamden's new Netflix doc is a cautionary tale that invites the audience to examine modern instant fame in the social media era. Clearly Kai had a mental disorder, and it's kinda sickening how they wanted to exploit him immediately.

Arthur and the Invisibles ★★½ I presumed this rambling, confusing #LucBesson hybrid animated/live-action movie was a success because I knew he made two sequels. Then I read the reviews and saw its box office returns. Luc is a mad man, this franchise must have bankrupted him.

Angel-A ★★½ "If you give a donkey a carrot, he'll know what to do with it." After a 6 year hiatus, presumable because of divorces, #LucBesson returned with his most pretentious film yet. The black & white photography is stunning but it doesn't make up for the lack of substance.

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc ★★ #LucBesson was originally just meant to produce this epic historical drama and Kathryn Bigelow was hired to be the director. After Besson insisted Milla Jovovich play the lead, Miss Bigelow jumped ship. One of Hollywood's wisest women.

The Fifth Element ★★★★ Shout out to @bryceier3 (The Fifth Element is his favourite film) who made me appreciate #LucBesson's epic majestic sci-fi action movie. We watched it many nights under the influence with the volume cranked up full in Australia after working in the bar.

Candy Land ★★★ I read some critics moaning that #JohnSwab's new indie horror about prostitution goes off the rails in the final act. Well that's kinda the point. It's an ode to sleazy exploitation movies, and I would have been disappointed if it didn't have the schlock factor.

Leon ★★★★½ I was first shown #LucBesson's masterpiece (one of the greatest action movies of all time) by a lazy substitute teacher back when I was 12. I loved every minute of it. Divine operatic violence & Gary Oldman's pill-popping swaggerous baddie are just heaven to watch.

Honourable Mention: #LostinTranslation "You'll figure that out. The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you." Sofia Coppola's romantic dramedy is stunning mood piece about shared melancholic loneliness in one of the most beautiful cities.

Brighton Rock (2010, Rowan Joffe) ★★★½ #SamRiley stars as Pinky in this reworking of #GrahamGreene's novel. Updating to 1964 works well, a temporal bridge between an old world of organised crime & rise in youth violence epitomised by clashes between mods/rockers. More than OK.

Atlantis (1991) ★★★ If you liked The Big Blue, then more than likely you'll enjoy #LucBesson's nature documentary. There's feck all narration, it's mostly shots of glorious underwater stuff of an alien world. Éric Serra's moody soundtrack adds to the film's chill atmosphere.

Nikita ★★★ "There are two things that are infinite: femininity and means to take advantage of it." Whether you like the genre or not, you have to say, #LucBesson is one of the godfathers of 'girls with guns' movies. An espionage, sexy, violent French version of My Fair Lady.

The Big Blue ★★★ #LucBesson clearly loves the ocean. I was surprised to learn that this visually stunning French freediving film was met lukewarmly received in the US. Sure it is 3 hours long, but there's so much to admire and Jean Reno has never been more charismatic as Enzo.

The Fabelmans ★★★½ "When the horizon's in the middle, it's boring as shit." The most personal film of #StevenSpielberg's career & I ate it all up. It's nowhere near as sentimental as I was expecting. This enchanting coming-of-age drama is a love letter to his parents & cinema.
