I'll never forget chatting with @MrChuckD for more than 2 hours a year before Public Enemy dropped It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back on the world.
This year, we celebrate 30-plus years of friendship.
Thank you for being a mentor & an inspiration!
Sudan's capital has been filled with the sounds of fighter jets and artillery fire.
But it wasn't always like this.
Khartoum ~ and Sudan ~ have a rich musical heritage, and today you'll hear songs from the country’s golden era as well as new sounds from the Sudanese diaspora.
Frequencies' Sudanese music special re-airs on @CBCMusic at 4 (ET).
You’ll hear lots of great stories and music, including songs by Sudanese legends Mohammed Wardi and Al Balabil, who were known as the “Sudanese Supremes."
Stay tuned to Big City on CBC Radio 1 to hear my conversation with Afghan-Canadian textile artist Hangama Amiri about her installation @AgaKhanMuseum
Hangama weaves themes like home, identity, and memories of her homeland and her diasporic experience into her stunning work.
Here are some of the pieces that are part of Hangama's installation, Distance Between Homes. It's part of the Aga Khan Museum’s new exhibition, Rumi: A Visual Journey Through The Life and Legacy of A Sufi Mystic.
Coming up on Big City Small World:
* Songs inspired by a walk along one of Cuba's most famous avenues, and by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's tumultuous relationship
* Music from artists performing at Estonian Music Week and Jewish Music Week +++
“As diaspora artists, we are always in search of something that reminds us of home.”
Had a great conversation with Afghan-Canadian textile artist Hangama Amiri about her installation at @AgaKhanMuseum
Our chats airs Saturday on Big City Small World.
“People think my life has been tough, but I think it's been a wonderful journey. The older you get, the more you realize it’s not *what* happens, but *how* you deal with it.”

Two Sudanese music legends are next on Frequencies on CBC Music:
Mohammed Wardi was a singer and activist who brought Nubian music to a much wider audience.
And Al Balabil ~ comprising sisters Amal, Hadia and Hayat Talsam ~ who were known as the “Sudanese Supremes,”
Stay tuned to Frequencies for a blast of ‘Arabian Fuzz' from Al-Qasar.
I'll spin a track featuring Alsarah. When she was little, a coup in Sudan forced her family to flee to Yemen, and after civil war broke out in Yemen, they fled to the US.
And then, a powerful song from Mustafa
"Now it's only me that needs to save himself,
Feel like I can't be here while you're in that realm.
Oh, I need time, oh, I need time,
Oh, I need time to mourn you,
Time to mourn you"
Mustafa's song, Ali, hits hard every time I hear it.
"Sometimes we leave home willingly, sometimes we are forced out, sometimes we plan to go back, and sometimes we don't know if we will ever see our loved ones again.
"But one thing we always know is that we don't want to forget or be forgotten."
Vik Sohonie says, "Known in some circles as Jaglara, this mysterious cosmic dance music is being innovated by one man named Jantra, which translates as “craziness."
Synthesized Sudan is out on June 16th.
Next on our all-Sudan special:
Two Niles to Sing a Melody: The Violins & Synths of Sudan is an essential compilaton that "revives the enchanting harmonies, haunting melodies and rhythms of Sudan's brightest years."
I'll play My Heart, Don’t Fall in Love Again by Samira Dunia.
The High Priest Music Festival at The Garrison next Friday will pay
tribute to the late, great Denise Jones.
I'll play a track by one of the bands who'll be performing on Big City Small World this evening.
